The Indian textile industry, started in 1850s, was still in a primitive craft stage till 1930s. Little formal education, rule of thumb solutions to problems, secrecy by mills and isolation of technicians were rampant.
The Mumbai Unit has the distinction of being not only the pioneering unit of the Association, but also having the largest number of members i.e. viz 4000.The Mumbai Unit has given to the nation the best of the textile professionals and technocrats. It has to its credit many national honours including the Best Unit Awards in the country.AI, Mumbai Unit provides appropriate forum for exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas in textile production and textile economics, management and marketing by organising work-shops, lectures, seminars, conferences. The Mumbai Unit publishes its Newsletter at regular intervals to update about the recent activities the members.Some small groups like Saturday Textile Club of Bombay and Textile Brotherhood at Ahmedabad existed on a small local scale. Ten visionary technocrats brought 126 technicians and managers together on Sunday, the 9th April 1939 to establish the Textile Association (India); a forum for free exchange of technical and other information in a spirit of fellowship and cooperation.
